Wheel Powder Coating in Queensbury: What Goes Into a Quality Finish?

Winters around Queensbury are hard on wheels. Road salt, brine, potholes, and brake dust wear down factory paint and clear coat, and by spring a lot of car and truck owners in Glens Falls, Lake George, and Saratoga are looking at curb rash, peeling clear, and corrosion creeping in from the edges. Powder coating is one of the most durable ways to bring wheels back. How well it lasts depends on the work done before any powder goes on.

Here's what goes into wheel powder coating in Queensbury, NY at ADK Blast N Coat, so you know what you're paying for and what to ask any shop you're considering.

Why Powder Coat Your Wheels?

Powder coating is applied as a dry powder, charged electrostatically so it clings to the metal, and then cured with heat into a hard, even finish. Compared with spray paint from a can, a properly prepped and cured powder coat usually:

  • Holds up better against chips, brake dust, and winter road chemicals
  • Goes on evenly, with no runs or drips
  • Comes in a huge range of colors and sheens

Done right, it isn't a cosmetic touch-up. It's a full refinish from bare metal.

What Goes Into a Quality Wheel Finish

Step 1: Tire Removal (If Needed)

If your wheels come in with tires on, we dismount them in-house on our touchless tire machine, which helps protect the wheel and tire during removal.

Step 2: Chemical Strip in Our Greensolv Tank

We start by stripping the old paint and clear coat in our Greensolv stripping tank, a heated immersion system built for removing powder coat and paint from metal parts. Greensolv's stripping chemistry is biodegradable and is maintained and reused instead of being dumped, which makes it a more eco-friendly way to strip wheels. Spraying over a factory finish only traps whatever is underneath it, including corrosion, flaking clear, and old touch-up paint. Stripping gets rid of all of it.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry in the Oven

After stripping, each wheel is washed off and then dried in the oven, so no moisture or residue is left behind before the next step.

Step 4: Sandblast

Next, the wheel is sandblasted down to clean, bare metal. Blasting removes any remaining coating and corrosion and leaves a surface profile the powder can bond to. If you see a finish peeling a year or two after another shop coated it, poor prep is often a likely cause.

Step 5: Curb Rash, Crack, and Bend Repair

With the wheel down to bare metal, we fix curb rash and other surface damage so it doesn't show through the new finish. We can also repair most cracks and minor bends. If a wheel is too badly damaged, we won't coat it. We'll let you know it isn't safe for the road.

Step 6: Mask the Mounting Pad

We tape off the back pad, the surface where the wheel mounts against the vehicle, so it stays bare metal and the wheel seats properly when it goes back on.

Step 7: Powder Coating, Including the Inside Barrel

Inside barrel coating is part of our wheel service. The barrel is the inner surface you see through the spokes and the part that takes the most brake dust and road spray. Coating it gives a cleaner look and adds protection where wheels often corrode first.

Step 8: Clear Coat Where It's Needed

Some finishes need a clear top coat to look right and hold up. Silver, charcoal, metallic, pearl, and flake colors all get a clear coat. Solid blacks generally don't.

Step 9: Tires Remounted and Balanced In-House

Once the powder coat is cured, we remount and balance your tires in-house. You don't need to pull the tires yourself or make a trip to a tire shop afterward.

Choosing Your Finish

Wheel Blackout: Gloss, Satin, or Flat Black

Black is the most popular choice by far. Our Wheel Blackout service offers three sheens:

  • Gloss black: deep and shiny, a classic look
  • Satin black: a soft sheen that suits a lot of trucks and SUVs
  • Flat black: a stealthy, no-shine look

Custom Colors

If you want something other than black, custom colors are available. Choose your color before you book. Custom powders typically take 5–7 days to arrive, and we'll let you know when your color is in so you can bring the vehicle or wheels. Multi-stage finishes and special-order colors are also possible. Ask about them when you book. (Hyper silver isn't available right now.)

What We Don't Take On

So there are no surprises:

  • Chrome wheels aren't accepted.
  • Severely damaged wheels. We repair most cracks and minor bends, but if a wheel is too far gone, we'll tell you it isn't safe for the road and won't refinish it.

Turnaround, Booking, and Deposit

  • Turnaround: Our Wheel Blackout service lists a 24–48 hour turnaround. For custom colors, add the time it takes the powder to arrive.
  • Two ways to drop off: leave the whole vehicle (we dismount, remount, and balance) or bring bare wheels with the tires already off (tire removal on bare-wheel jobs is an extra charge).
  • Deposit: a $50 non-refundable deposit is required when you book. The remaining balance is due at drop-off or pickup.

For current pricing on your wheels and finish, check the booking page or call the shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does wheel powder coating take?

Our Wheel Blackout service lists a 24–48 hour turnaround. Custom colors take longer because the powder usually takes 5–7 days to arrive before work starts.

Do you coat the inside of the barrel?

Yes. Inside barrel coating is included in our wheel service.

Do I need to take the tires off first?

Not if you drop off the whole vehicle. We'll dismount, remount, and balance the tires for you. If you're bringing bare wheels, they need to come with the tires already off. Otherwise, tire removal is an extra charge.

Can you powder coat chrome wheels?

No, we don't accept chrome wheels.

Will you fix a bent or cracked wheel?

In most cases, yes. We can repair most cracks and minor bends. A wheel that's too badly bent or cracked isn't safe for the road, so we won't refinish it, and we'll tell you that up front.

Which colors need a clear coat?

Silver, charcoal, metallic, pearl, and flake finishes all get a clear coat.
